Each year, IRS schedules a planned power outage during Labor Day weekend, which means no transmission of returns. On August 15th, 2012, IRS announced that this year’s outage will be six days (August 29th through September 4th) for legacy (the older filing method), which includes 1040 and 1041 returns … and four days (August 31st, 1:00 pm through September 4th at noon) for Mef (modernized e-file), which includes 1040 and business returns. Well over 90% of 1040 returns transmitted to Drake Software go through the new Mef system, so most transmissions are not impacted on the 29th and 30th of August. For 1041 returns, however, none can be transmitted for six days, as IRS does not yet support 1041 Mef.

Preparers may continue to transmit to Drake Software without interruption. But expect some acknowledgments to take 6 days longer than normal.
